remember the last time you pissed yourself?
well, i can tell you when the next time is going to be. Saturday night August 10, 2019, Somewhere, WI, main stage, shortly after 1:00am when the first 303 squelch comes through the Wall of Bass.
when it came time to book someone to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the original Furthur of course number one on our list was Aphex Twin. i mean HE WAS THERE in 1994. turns out this was the year he was doing multiple gigs and he wasn’t doing any more by the time we messaged. number two, and for all practical purposes the real number one, was dj ESP Woody McBride. not only was he there in 1994, but he was one of the promoters making it happen! in some aspects it was his crazy idea (the multiple days thing).
we wanted to do something extra special though. then i remembered an event i was at way back when in Madison when Woody McBride and Iosefa Manumaleuna aka dj Hyperactive played together as SYNC. that night there was an equipment malfunction or something and Joe got on the mic and chanted 303 over and over. now THAT was pure Midwest rave time filling. would they ever think about doing that live act again? after all these years. for a super special event. one they helped build and make world famous. for a crowd that absolutely adores them.
no hesitation…HELL YES they’d do SYNC again! the best part about it, they were honored and excited to do it! no questions about how or if they could do it again, instead scheduling studio time together to practice. tuning and refurbishing old analogue gear…including a sweet new 303 mod that Hyperactive recently acquired. if there was ever a “get the band back together” moment this is it.
i wish there was a better behind the scenes booking story on this one, but when two of your homies are these guys it’s as simple as it gets.
dj ESP Woody McBride and dj Hyperactive are Midwest Hardcorps OGs. our history is their history. half of the original Drop Bass Network discography was produced by these two badasses. they were part of the majority of our events “back in the day”. they never went away. just kept plugging along doing their thing making tracks and showing the world what the Midwest was about with their music.
and now we’re gonna make more history. starting with this appearance at Even Furthur. continuing with DBN071 on our record label and released at Even Furthur. both of these producers are back in the studio making music for the rave resurgence. these are exciting times again for sure. we call it acieed and it’s back. as if it ever left the Midwest.
SYNC only played live a few times. the one that EVERYONE still talks about wasn’t the basement show i mentioned above. the mountain top was one night in Chicago at an event called Acidic Pyramid with non other than Hardfloor headlining. this was a historic party that every Midwest acid head, including the Hawtin’s, came to be part of. here’s a link to the SYNC set that night. turn it up to 11…because they sure did!
there’s not a lot more that can be said about two dj’s we know and love coming together once again to perform live. i kind of have a feeling this one’s gonna be a lot like Daft Punk vs Scott Hardkiss at Even Furthur in 1996. people talk and talk about Daft Punk, but everyone who was there knows that Scott Hardkiss was “the moment”. and what better way to commemorate 25 years than with this moment! bring a piddle pad.
here’s a blurry pic of us a few weeks ago playing in Rockford. same as it ever was.
