Even Furthur 2019 Artist Spotlight: Volvox

The following was written by Intellephunk founder and Even Furthur 2019 partner Centrific.

As a promoter you get emails everyday from agents trying to get you to book the artists on their roster. It’s a bit overwhelming. They have always got dj so and so coming through the midwest, and they always think it would be great if they could get them a gig in Minneaoplis on some date you have no plans to do an event… They always have great advice on how you could make it work.

I spend a lot of time explaining things in my town are a bit more DIY, and that I do things a bit differently. I rarely if ever book any acts from these agency emails. Most Agencies are stiff, lame, and working with them isn’t what I signed up for when I decided to start doing parties.

I prefer to book friends, or people I’ve reached out to personally, and have a connection with.

Last fall I got an interesting email though from my friend Jon Davis introducing me to Cara the agent representing Volvox.

She said that Volvox aka Arianna Poaletti had asked her to figure out who she needed to contact in order to play Even Furthur next year. I was familiar with Volvox as being a dj involved with the now legendary Unter parties in New York, but I hadn’t really had a chance to hear her play. After checking out a couple mixes I was sold, I said hell let’s get her out to Minnesota asap, and see if we can’t make Furthur work too.

After that it was fairly easy to get Kurt on board once he heard Arianna plays acid, and the fact that she came looking for us sealed the deal.

So she came out to play a small party on a cold Thursday night in December last year.

Volvox is legit af she fully delivered beyond all expectations! Acid, electro, techno, distorted funky business. The girl got jams!

The next day Jasmine, and I were able to grab lunch with her before dropping her at the airport. We had a great conversation about growing up in Buffalo, and the early days of her career in Boston. She told us about the diy techno parties in New York and how they gave way to parties like Unter, and the queer techno movement that has been gaining momentum worldwide! Of course we talked about her career taking off, playing Berghain, the Whole Queer Festival, and her Boiler Room filmed at the Porceptual party in Berlin (the video was taken off of youtube but can now be found at its new home on pornhub).

We played some techno, broke some bread, agency, or no agency that’s what this shit is really all about right?
