The following was written by DVS1’s long time friend and peer Centrific.
With Zak playing Even Furthur 2019 we come full circle.
Back in 1998 Zak was given the chance by Kurt to run a Minneapolis DIYss at Even Furthur in Rockford Illinois. Saturday night he decided “hey I’m gonna fire up the rig and play while Richie Hawtin is playing” of course within a short time The Support Squad promptly showed up and shut him down. The next year he wasn’t invited back as a DIYss.
He was however booked for the DBN’s “Big Rave” back in 2000 which was his first big out of town booking.
20 years and some change later he returns as one of our headliners!
A product of the midwest scene, seasoned by years of touring the world, DVS1 returns to the original midwest family reunion, and if mr Hawtin shows up with a DIYss during Zak’s set we’re shutting him down too! I could go on for days, about road trips, parties, and getting in trouble with this guy, but you are probably more interested in hearing about Zak the world famous techno dj, than you are about raver fishing, or the guy who stood up and gave a speech at our wedding after my best man failed miserably.
It’s been an amazing journey to watch one of my closest friends go from street level hustler to being one of the worlds most highly acclaimed disk jockeys. Zak is much more than just a dj. He is also the physical embodiment of the word integrity, and the voice of reason. Self appointed spokesman of the underground, and hoarder of subwoofers.
Few personalities in the world of techno, command as much respect.
His sets, his ethics, his tunes, his labels, are constant conversation pieces in the global techno community. Everybody loves Zak!
You would think booking one of your closest homies would be a simple task, but the reality is this man is playing close to 150 shows per year! We tried to get DVS1 on the bill the last 3 years. This year the stars aligned, and I’m proud to say we will be hosting 3 DVS1 sets on Sunday at Even Furthur 2019! First at Communion, Then on the MainStage Sunday night, followed immediately by a set in the pit!!! Minneapolis Represent!!!
