Even Furthur 2019 Artist Spotlight: Kiisu

The following was written by Niki Kitz herself.

Even Furthur is coming up really soon and I am beyond excited and a bit nervous. EF is a really big deal to me.

When I was in college I wrote my thesis on raves in Wisconsin because it seemed like a great excuse to learn a bunch about the history of it all. I interviewed a lot of ravers and naturally heard all about Even Furthur. This was 2012/2013 so there still wasn’t any talk of another EF in the books yet but I had really high hopes that something of that nature might happen again at some point. Fast forward a few years and here we are! Playing in the Pit the past couple years has been a huge highlight for me. It allowed me to explore some really interesting weird corners of music and it definitely helped shape my current identity as a DJ.

What is super crazy is that I was asked to play a set as Kiisu on the MAIN STAGE this year. 🤭 As I’ve been getting more and more into music production and ambient/soundscape music, Kiisu has been transforming from my “side project” into a more primary musical identity. I’ve been acquiring some really wonderful instruments and music making machines and the more time I spend with them, the more effectively I’m able to express myself through them.

I’ve been really on the fence about DJing versus playing a live set at EF because holy cow, that’s a big scary system, but after much deliberation, I’ve decided that I’m going to do a “live sound collage” type set with 100% my own raw material. If you’re curious what I mean by that, ask me next time you see me and I’ll be happy to talk about it  I’m playing in the early morning on Saturday (before hardcore breakfast). The goal is to create space for people to recombobulate before the craziness that will be the rest of the weekend… it will be somewhere on the continuum between music and nothing. I am highly recommending bringing blankets and comfy stuff to lay or sit on. It will not be dance music, or anything close to it, it will be soundscapes and drone to meditate/think/zone out/sleep to – whatever your brain and body need to do!

I finished my very first EP! It’s called “Moon Eater” and it is being released at Even Furthur by Abstrakt Xpressions, a super cool local leftfield/experimental/ambient label (who coincidentally released my first track at EF last year). It will be available digitally and on 10” lathe cut vinyl. I worked on it for a long time and I used some neat stuff to make it – my eurorack synthesizer, Mescaline (which is another synth), field recordings (all of which were taken in the two years I’ve lived in mpls), my voice through a voice transformer and a space pedal, and electro-acoustic instruments built by Tim Kaiser. I’m super proud of it despite being relatively new to the world of production. It is not really your traditional “ambient” music- it’s pretty minimal but it’s got a bit of edge to it and some of it borders on noise music. I imagine that not everyone will be into it, but it feels very me.

I think that’s it. 😅 I hope everyone is having super fun and productive summers so far! 🌞 Anyone who took the time to read all of this – ily! 🖤🖤🖤

See you @ Even Furthur 😈
