I wasn’t a huge fan of dubstep until I was lucky enough to hear Joe Nice.
I had gone to plenty of Dubstep shows, but I had not really found my niche with the music.
Despite that fact I made some friends in the local dubstep scene, and was eventually asked to play at the Infrasound Equinox festival.
Saturday night I decided to dip into a little of Dr Hofmann’s secret elixir, and right about the time things were starting to get weird, I wandered into the woods where I found the Pyramid stage. Throbbing out of the sound system was minimalistic hypnotic bass, and percussion, complimented by glorious industrial noises. This was nothing like the dubstep I had heard previously, this had all the best elements of jungle, and techno. It was dark and the bass was deep! I was impressed not only with the tunes, but whoa this dude can mix, and oh and shit it’s vinyl. This was the sound of the underground.
Occasionally he would get on the mic and introduce the tunes(mostly dub plates).
This was the first time I had fun actually dancing to dubstep, and the night I became a fan.
I went home and got on the ol’ google machine to see what this dude’s deal was.
Turn’s out he was like the first stateside dubstep dj, considered by many to be the North America ambassador of the genre, and the first to have brought this music to the states. The reason he didn’t really sound like most of the dubstep I had heard was because he play was playing the true UK dubstep that I had been missing out on for years by this point (I’m not terribly hip). Joe was behind some of the first dubstep nights in the US, both in Baltimore, as well as NYC. He also runs top US dubstep vinyl imprint “Gourmet Beats”, as well as a radio show by the same name. Also one of the most energetic and positive people behind the decks!
Last year there was a post in Furthur Family about who we should book, when Dubstep came up Joe Nice was top of my list, and by then I believe he was on Kurt’s radar as well. It didn’t take long before somebody invited him to our group, and he was in the conversation. Soon Kurt, and Joe were chatting and the next thing you know he was our first booking for 2019.
Enjoy this video of Joe Nice playing a couple of the Twin City’s own Ternion Sound’s yet to be released tracks recently at the Borealis Festival! Can’t wait to see Joe on the bus!!!!
