do you like dirty talking?
yeah, of course you do. add a beating kick to that and it’s the formula for a musical genre called ghetto house.
the first time we heard dj Funk live was late 96 at a Mushgroove party in Chicago. there was no denying the frenzy he worked the dancefloor into that night. at the time his mixtapes were a hit at Hot Jams Records and they could be heard booming out of low riders around Chicago’s Southside. but the question was would this music work at a rave? was it even appropriate to play those lyrics? the answer…YES!
we were the next promoter to booked Funk, for a Digital Hardcore party of all things. somehow it worked there to. or should i say the crowd worked it. who was this guy and more importantly what sort of voodoo was in this music?
at the end of that year Funk played our annual NYE event. in fact he brought a tape along that had his best booty samples in between the numbers for the countdown at midnight. everyone that was there remembers us playing The Who “Baba O’Riley” at midnight because the event was called Teenage Wasteland, but those 10 seconds before that were what put smiles on faces.
during his set it was chaos. people were climbing the sound system scaffolding and swinging their bootys around like they just didn’t care. the dancefloor was ass and arms flying everywhere. again, what the hell was in this music!? it was like some sort of girls gone wild dance-a-thon. we didn’t unleash this power at every event, but when we did it was memorable.
fast forward to today’s culture and there’s no way ghetto house was gonna be allowed on a main stage. or could it be? we added some slots to main last year for a few DIYss headliners. Electrified/Soul Fuel got one of those and said Slugo would take it. cautiously we guessed it “could” work? that hour turned out to be one of the best of the weekend!
turns out booty never goes out of style and the lyrics are so obnoxious and over the top that ain’t no one taking it seriously. one thing is for certain, the music is a lot of fun! and it still has the power to make people dance like crazy ass shaking fools. laughing the whole time.
so we HAD to bring it back. if you follow Deeon on instagram you already know he’s living the life. considered the creator of ghetto house, he was our pick to go big or go home. his tracks on the legendary Dancemania include “Let Me Bang”, “Work This MF”, “House-O-Matic” and a long list of titles we’re not going to repeat here. lol. if you listen to any of his mixes it’s pure Chicago Southside style of fast mixing and bang bang bang.
even though he is who he is, the cool thing about Deeon is he’s still down to earth. from his days of slinging mixtapes he became friends with Mellen local and Rockford og Jes One. an introduction was made and i got a text that simply said “put me in coach”. oh you’re in and it’s on! we’re so excited about this we gave him an hour and a half!
